Summer 2012 is the Little Engine that Could and Won’t Stop! Had another double shot of hot damn in the Dallas area with a costume party (who does those in summer?) at Sandaga 813 and Mark Farina at It’ll Do Dallas.
In the case of the first event, I wasn’t sure myself about attending a costume party in July, but I’m glad I did. Tons of new faces from across the board (and some slick support from local DJs John Walker, Alberto Martinez, and Sean Sparks) met and greeted each other in attire not necessarily the norm AND I learned a little bit more about North Texas Burn Culture. I may even possibly attend an event before the year is up if things keep up as they have been. Kind and open folk with a different view on every day life they are and the gadgetry they come up with is amazing. I’ll save those pics for another time. 😉
Saturday was Bastille Day so I got to enjoy a little bit of the celebration that Bishop Arts presented this year with a friend of mine. Barbecue and Yerba Mate soda. You just don’t know how good life really can be till you’ve had that combo. The “Itis” kicked in (aka I passed out) and Saturday night’s main event at It’ll Do Dallas crept up sooner than I thought. Got gussied up, drove down with a friend, and took in the marvel of mixing magic as Mark Farina showed why he is known as a “Funky Decknician.”
He took 2 and a half hours and made it seem like 4. All the time weaving a musical slipstream made of Disco, Jazz, subtle Hip Hop nods, 50s Jazz standards, a little Yacht Rock, a touch of Reggae, and NEVER LOST THE CROWD ONCE. The line was out the door by 11:30 PM and as you’ll see from some of the pictures, it was a packed house.
If you left that place dry, you did it WRONG.
See how and why I made that statement so boldly.
When the funk hits the fan, you’re sure to understand. So get on down!
